MEASUREMENT TASK

To monitor the water flow rate in a fish farm in North Wales, the British company Ocean Matters was looking for a portable ultrasonic flow meter. The company is pioneering a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to minimizing the use of medicinal chemicals in salmon farming. They raise lumpfish, a clean species that prefers to pick sea lice from farmed salmon and eat up to 100 at a time. The lumpfish live in harmony with the farmed salmon, significantly reducing the amount of chemicals needed for their successful rearing. Therefore, they needed a flexible method to monitor the water flow between the fish tanks and the filtration systems in the biosecurity facility.

SOLUTION

Livestock producer Ocean Matters monitored the hatchery's filter and tank performance by measuring water flow through PVC pipes to ensure an optimal environment for the salmon. The portable KATflow 200 handheld device was selected for this measurement task. The robust sensors are simply attached to PVC pipes with chains and clamps and connected to the battery-operated ultrasonic flow meter. The flow rate is measured and recorded at various measuring points for later analysis. Ocean Matters Hatchery Manager Dave Jones approvingly noted, “We were very pleased with the ease of use of the Katronic meter and the support we received from the Katronic staff in Coventry. Crucially, the device worked well with our PVC pipes, and it performed excellently.”
