Methane Detection – Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection launches the MethaSense product series

With the introduction of new natural gas emission standards and regulatory deadlines, the detection and monitoring of environmentally harmful gases have become increasingly important. Teledyne Gas & Flame Detection (Teledyne GFD) addresses this need with its new battery-powered MethaSense methane detector series, utilizing advanced NDIR infrared sensor technology.

The autonomous product family includes three models – MethaSense, MethaSense XP, and MethaSense Trace – all equipped with patented NDIR sensors for accurate and reliable natural gas detection.

MethaSense

This compact, wireless natural gas detector features a measurement range of 0–5 vol.% and is ideal for residential and commercial buildings. High methane selectivity and resistance to sensor poisoning minimize false alarms. Integrated visual and audible alarms provide immediate warning. The device supports smart home integration and advanced metering infrastructure.

MethaSense detects methane concentrations starting at 10% of the lower explosive limit (LEL). Optional LoRaWAN connectivity enables real-time transmitter status monitoring. With a battery life exceeding 10 years, the detector ensures continuous protection even during power outages while keeping operating costs low.

MethaSense XP

Designed for industrial applications, MethaSense XP combines advanced NDIR sensing technology with enhanced durability and wireless communication options including LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, and Bluetooth.

With more than 10 years of battery life, corrosion resistance, and ATEX and IECEx certifications, MethaSense XP is suitable for hazardous areas and demanding industrial environments.

MethaSense Trace

MethaSense Trace is developed for LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair) applications in utilities and large industrial facilities requiring precise and autonomous methane monitoring.

With IP67 protection for outdoor use, the device operates reliably in harsh environments. Its detection range extends from 50 ppm up to 100 vol.%, offering ten times higher selectivity compared to previous-generation sensors.

By combining real-time sensing, cloud-based analytics, and automated reporting, MethaSense Trace enables 24/7 methane detection, monitoring, and quantification across large installations, supporting regulatory compliance.

As of August 5, 2025, the EU Methane Regulation requires operators to submit detailed annual methane emission reports, including independent verification.

“The NDIR technology used across all three detectors provides high selectivity, fast response times, and long-term reliability,” explains Régis Prevost, Product Line Manager at Teledyne GFD. “The MethaSense portfolio offers a low-maintenance, cost-effective solution with over 10 years of battery operation, no recalibration required, wireless connectivity options, and suitability for smart and safety-critical infrastructures.”
